18.05.2009: Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung triumphs over cost pressure in publishing
The growth of the Internet as a source of information and changes in the reading habits of newspaper readers mean that newspaper publishers have to deal with constantly changing requirements such as Web 2.0 or Paid Content, for example, which can place a major strain on financial resources. Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung (Neue OZ) is a perfect example of how media enterprises can reduce costs, optimise their internal processes and identify hidden cost drivers. TA Triumph-Adler West GmbH carried out a detailed analysis of the document management and all associated internal processes at the newspaper. The results were quite surprising and showed that the media enterprise can reduce its costs in this area by almost half, or 40 per cent to be precise. This was enough of an incentive for Neue OZ to put their trust in the specialists for efficiency in the document business and implement a completely new output management system that can finally guarantee full cost control.
Dortmund, May 18, 2009 – With a paid circulation of 165,393 copies (Monday to Friday, IVW I/2009) and 442,000 readers daily (MA 2008), Neue OZ and its regional editions are among some of the biggest regional newspapers in Germany. Not surprisingly, the volume of printed pages produced in editing and administration by such a big media enterprise is huge. However, before the visit by the document consultants from TA Triumph-Adler West, the extent to which the daily printing, faxing, scanning and copying of information contributed to costs at Neue OZ was underestimated. “We come across this very frequently. Few companies even realise that they spend between five and 15 per cent of their turnover on document management”, explains Guido Eisfeld, who is responsible for project sales at TA Triumph-Adler West. “In order to identify savings potential in individual areas, you must begin with a detailed analysis of the processes.”
For the analysis at Neue OZ, the TOM (Total Output Management) consulting and analysis concept developed by TA Triumph-Adler was used. The results of this analysis were used to develop a solution for optimising document management that is tailored to the specific requirements of Neue OZ. The experts from TA Triumph-Adler installed a standardised, state-of-the art system landscape with models that require only one type of paper. Thanks to modernisation of the hardware and optimisation of the service and consumsables, the newspaper publisher looks set to reduce its document management costs by 40 per cent.
There are other benefits to be gained by the media enterprise through co-operation with TA Triumph-Adler West. For example, the document business specialists supply the specialist hardware, software and consumables from a single source and take charge of the financing, control and maintenance of all office systems. Payment is based on the number of pages printed. Costs are invoiced in a fixed monthly amount that includes the rental of the systems and the average number of printed pages. Thanks to this system, office communication costs at Neue OZ are fully transparent for the very first time. Data for print, copy and fax volumes is now readily available for each cost centre. This means greater reliability in relation to costs and planning for the newspaper publisher. Flexibility with regard to terms and conditions throughout the term of the contract was a deciding factor for Neue OZ when choosing a service provider.
