20.05.2008: Famous Adler company emblem created by the Bauhaus founder
Walter Gropius, who created architectural history with the foundation of Bauhaus, was born 125 years ago this month. Gropius’ talents extended beyond architecture, however. He acted as designer and graphic artist for Adler (formerly Heinrich Kleyer AG) in Frankfurt.
Nuremberg, May 20, 2008 – The ‘Staatliche Bauhaus Weimar’, which Walter Gropius founded in Weimar in 1919 as a school of arts, is today renowned the world over as an avant-garde example of Classic Modernism in all areas of fine and applied arts. So significant was the Bauhaus influence, that the term ‘Bauhaus’ is often used synonymously with Modernism in architecture and design. Walter Gropius was one of the pioneering masters of modern architecture, which became widely known as ‘New Building’ or ‘New Objectivity’ in the 1920s.
At the end of the 1920s, Gropius was commissioned by Adler to design bodyworks for large Adler cars. Adler was at that time one of the most successful car makers in Germany. The cars designed by Gropius was presented for the first time at the Paris Motor Show in 1930. Their unembellished design caused quite a sensation worldwide, but never made it as far as serial production. Gropius also designed the Adler company emblem at the end of the 1920s. From 1930 onwards, the stylised eagle with widely spread wings adorned the radiator grille of Adler cars and remained a design feature until the 1970s. In the meantime, the company was renamed Triumph-Adler and became one of the most successful office machine companies in the business. After an eventful history, TA Triumph-Adler AG is today the market leader for the document business in Germany, and the specialist when it comes to efficiency in the document business.
