24.06.2009: To prevent poverty from taking root:
Education – as early as possible

Nuremberg, 24th June 2009 – The first three sponsored projects supported by the Triumph-Adler foundation "Triumph für Kinder" are run by the Nuremberg "Alliance for the Family". Since the middle of 2008, this initiative has been putting the concept of "Child day care facilities as family centres" into practice. The objective is to improve the educational opportunities of children from low-income and educationally deprived social strata (with and without immigration backgrounds) and thereby contribute to the prevention of poverty.

All three projects are located in socially deprived areas. Most of the children live in precarious situations, i.e. they are poor or are living on the poverty line.

From 2009 to 2012, the Lutheran University of Applied Sciences Nuremberg will monitor and evaluate all the provisions, services and processes at these day care facilities in order to determine the effectiveness of their activities.

Project 1: Healthy diet for body and soul

Family Centre Bleiweiß – Nuremberg/Südstadt

Brief profile:

Child day care facility, with 75 places for children aged between 3 and 6 years

Philosophy and main focus:

Breakfast, which is prepared communally, is an important daily event. The benefits of a healthy diet are thus “made tangible” for the children and parents. In addition to promoting healthy living, the experience of spending time together, of mutual support and communication, as well as learning together are of incalculable value for the children’s psychological well-being.

How the foundation’s funds are utilised

"Currently, we would like to further improve and expand on the quality of the diet at the day care facility. We would like to offer breakfast, an organic lunch and afternoon snacks for all the children. Our goal is not only to feed all the children in a healthy manner, but to make them fit for everyday life by communicating an awareness of a healthy diet, as well as healthy inter-cultural customs and lifestyles with lots of outdoor exercise."

(Hülya Hunger, Head of the facility)

Project 2: Education and playful learning

Family Centre St. Leonhard – Nuremberg/St. Leonhard

Brief profile:

Child day care facility, with 130 places for children aged between 0 and 14 years

Philosophy and main focus:

Children have great innate interest in the natural world. They ask lots of questions and try to understand their environment. An early education in science, mathematics and technology picks up on the children’s interests and enhances their personal relationship with the environment, while promoting the development of a positive self-image. The project group establishes connections to everyday family life and involves the parents in the teaching activities.

How the foundation’s funds are utilised

"The team at the Family Centre St. Leonhard seeks to promote and develop the area of scientific and mathematical education. The main focus is on helping children understand their environment by questioning, observation, research, experimentation and exploration."

(Sandra Nickel, former Head of facility)

Project 3: Movement and creative learning

Family Centre Sperberstrasse – Nuremberg/Südstadt

Brief profile:

Child day care facility, with 83 places for children aged between 3 and 8 years

Philosophy and main focus:

Movement is a way of exploring and understanding the world. Socially deprived children in particular often spend too much time in front of the television, where they are "subdued", "pacified", "dumped". Consequently, the main emphasis at this day care centre is on movement, free expression and free play. The teachers trust in the child’s own developmental abilities, supporting their independent fulfilment and encouraging the children’s own natural urge for movement.

How the foundation’s funds are utilised

"We support parents by, for example, vividly documenting the ‘learning history’ of their children using photos, text and videos. This way, they can understand their children even better and can offer them the ideal conditions for learning and self-fulfilment. Studies from America have shown that the living and development conditions for children can be sustainably improved by supporting parents in the educational field. ‘Parents learn, just as children do’ – For us, this slogan stands for our cooperation with our children's parents."

(Gerhard Fuchs, Head of facility)
